The Queensway waterfront redevelopment focused on a new aquarium and recreational facilities in what was a deteriorated part of a once beautiful waterfront. The ocean liner Queen Elizabeth is moored just across the inlet from the pier.
This project is a classic example of a large-scale municipal project influenced by environmental concerns. After the project had been contracted, the city decided to change its purchasing policies to include as much FSC certified ipe as possible and was willing to pay a premium price for the decking and was willing, reluctantly, to wait for the delayed delivery of the product. This project was a pioneering project that would now be much easier to fulfill in FSC Naturally Durable™ hardwoods like ipé.
